His first wife was bitterly opposed to it. By the winter of 1846 , it became necessary for him to make a choice Susan told him to leave the Church or move out. He decided in favor of the church and left his home and family and went west with the Mormons. In the spring after his arrival in the Valley, he went back east to help the main body of the saints come west. While there, he met Mary , the woman who was to be his second wife, and he brought her west. He served a mission to New Jersey in 1879 .
